Granfondo Gavia and Mortirolo 2026: the new Gavia cycle/pedestrian variant opens on July 4th.

There’s one date that stands out on the amateur cycling calendar: Sunday, July 5, when the Granfondo Gavia e Mortirolo will hold its second consecutive edition in Ponte di Legno. This edition marks a historic turning point: the opening of the Variante Tridentina, the new bike and pedestrian path that will revolutionize the ascent to Gavia by eliminating one of the most critical and dreaded sections of the climb.

Farewell to the Rocce Nere Tunnel: The Variante Tridentina Is Born

The big news for 2026 is the inauguration of the new route, which allows cyclists to bypass the old Rocce Nere Tunnel, built in 1986 and 400 meters long, which has always been considered a treacherous spot due to its darkness, steep gradients, and limited visibility.

With the Tridentina Bypass, which will officially open on July 4, cyclists will be able to tackle the final three kilometers toward the 2,621-meter Gavia Pass in complete safety, enjoying a scenic stretch that ranks among the highest bike and pedestrian paths in Europe.

A Week of Sustainable Mobility: Introducing the “Passi Mitici”

The Granfondo will be the highlight of a week dedicated to sustainable mobility, thanks to a collaboration with the Department of Sports and Tourism of the Valle Camonica Mountain Community. This has led to the creation of the “Passi Mitici” project, which will close some of the area’s most iconic climbs to motorized traffic.

The schedule of closures:

  • June 30 — Passo del Vivione
  • July 2 — Montecampione, site of the historic Pantani–Tonkov showdown
  • July 5 — Gavia and Mortirolo, on the day of the Granfondo

The Mortirolo will play a special role: for the 2026 edition, it has been officially recognized as “Cima Pantani”, a tribute to the eternal bond between “Il Pirata” and these legendary climbs.

Three Routes, One Great Experience

Ponte di Legno will, as always, be the beating heart of the event, with three routes designed for every type of cyclist:

  • Long Route (141 km) — Gavia + Mortirolo from the most iconic side, the Mazzo side.
  • Medium Route (110 km) — Gavia + Mortirolo from the Grosio side.
  • Short Route (45 km) — Gavia only, with a finish at high altitude and a non-competitive return.

Registration is open, as is information on the Gravel Experience, dedicated to off-road enthusiasts.
